| Captain Garrett Faces a Predator |
Captain Garrett’s Office
Nate ignored his captain’s call. Now we discover who was waiting on the other end—and why finding him matters so much.
Chapter 6 of Wolf’s Man takes us inside Captain Garrett’s office, where a police badge offers little protection against the demands of the were world. Janelle’s pursuers haven’t given up, and Nate’s connection to his department could put them both in danger.

Wolf's Man
Chapter 6
Wiping
his face with his left hand, he sat so hard his desk chair rolled back a few
inches. “You’re sure this,” he held up a scrap of paper with a license plate
number written on it, “is the license of the car she got into?”
The
blonde man nodded. “She jumped in his vehicle, and he sped off. We just barely
got the plate number before they were gone.”
The
captain frowned. “Officer Ramirez saw Detective Rollins pull into the lot with
a blonde woman. They seemed to be arguing, then they left.”
The
other man leaned forward, expression intense and threatening. “Under the
circumstances, either he’s helping her, or she kidnapped him.”
Garrett
sighed. “I don’t like this. Rollins is my best detective. I don’t want anything
to happen to him, even if I don’t like him personally.”
“You
don’t like him?” asked the blonde.
“No,
Martin, I don’t like him. He smells off. Not were, just...off. It keeps me off kilter when he’s around.”
Martin
jumped to his feet and stalked back and forth across the office. “Well, we have
to find him. He can lead us to the girl. We can’t let her get to Oklahoma. If
she contacts the Were Council, we could lose everything we have gained.”
“You’ll
lose more than that. If the Council gets involved, your life is forfeit after
all you and your cats have done.”
Martin
stopped in front of the desk and leaned over it, both hands flat on the wooden
desktop. “That’s why you’re going to help us. Find out where they are. We’ll
take care of it from there.” Behind Martin, Franklin, his second, stared at
Garrett., eyes full of menace.
Garrett
ignored Franklin and tried to match Martin’s stare but couldn’t. Martin was the
Queen’s Tom. In the human world, Garrett
had power. In the were world, his
power meant nothing. Sighing, he picked up his phone. “Jenson, we have reason
to believe that Rollins has been kidnapped by a woman the FBI are after. See if
you can locate his cell phone for me.” He listened for a moment, then said, “I
know it’s not regulation, but if he isn’t in trouble, I don’t want to put him
there. Find out where he is and let me know.” He listened again, then said.
“Thanks.”
Garrett
hung up the phone and looked at Martin.
Several minutes later, Garrett answered his phone on the first ring, listened
to Jenson’s report. He said, “Thanks, Jenson,” then hung up.
“His
phone is in Williamson County, somewhere between Georgetown and Florence.”
Martin
stood straight. “I would hate to think you would inform him that we are
coming.”
Shaking his head, Garrett sighed. “I wouldn’t dare.”
Garrett knows Nate is his best detective, but he’s afraid to stand against Martin. What do you think it would take for him to risk warning Nate? Share your predictions in the comments!
